Hallo Detailboy!

No, sorry, a real phone line can't be emulated in software. You will
have to do some hardware things, but for a start try this easy one:
Both your fax and your modem should have two wires coming to it from the
phone socket, remove these wires (i think in USA they are red and green)
from the phone line. Now connect one line from the fax with one from the
modem. Then connect the other from the fax with a 9 volts battery (these
small blocks), polarity doesn't matter. Connect the last free one with
the other connector on the battery. This arrangement should now work as
a very simple telephone switch.
Now turn off "wait for dialtone" in your fax software (or put ATX3 in
your modem init string), and send a fax to any number. If you are lucky,
this will do the job.
Note that normally this should not do any harm to your hardware, but in
case it does, i will not pay for anything.
If you don't dare doing these hardware modifications, you can buy a
small PBX (private branch exchange, i do not know if that is the right
word for it, some machine where you can connect lots of phones and make
free calls between them and if you dial a "0" you get the "real" phone
line) and put your phone, modem and fax on it.
