Dear Folks,

To all those who tried to help me to set up my Cardinal 14.4 modem,
my sincere thanks. By trial and error, and by jumper arrangements
that followed no rhyme or reason, I was actually able to set up
the modem at times so that it would be recognized by the diagnostic
program "Modem Doctor", which someone recommended. It even passed
all the diagnostics. However, the modem would not actually work.
It would suddenly halt in the middle of a dialing operation. Could
not hang it up or reset it without re-booting. Maybe it is just
defective, or maybe it is one of the "Winmodem" types that will not
perform under DOS. This modem also passed the diagnostics built into
COMIT for DOS. An interesting observation is that it would not pass
the diagnostics for BANANA.EXE, which is a very nice freeware BBS
dialing program that can be downloaded from the author's website at
http://www.split.com
