Netscape Mail v 3.0 Known Bugs?

I'm on this list for my older 2/3/486's and I've had a constant freeze
problem using Netscape v 3.0 on a P-90, 32MB RAM, Win95 A which I use
for net research for these older PCs. It's really annoying to freeze
every 30-45 minutes. And because of these constant freezes I use DOS
ScanDisk /autofix set in autoexec.bat, which makes restarting a longer
drawn out druggery.

Anyone had similar experience with Netscape 3 or solutions?

The number one problem I have is that the Mail app locks up my PC. I've
noticed that a number of things can cause this. If I'm web browsing and
if a new incoming mail message is waiting on the mail server before I
"get mail", that can cause the freeze. If I'm reading a variety of long
messages like this and other lists and trashing, reading new long
messages from the Inbox, Outbox, Sent and Trash folders, creating new
messages and the variety of mail reading tasks, when Netscape Mail reads
data to display it, that causes the freeze.

I notice that disk reading is what triggers these freezes. Scrolling
can also cause this freeze as new data is read.

This freezing doesn't occur in other non-Netscape applications, but then
I don't spend as much time in other apps.

Other non-mail actions have caused this freeze. If I open the address
book or even more so, bookmarks, that can cause the freeze.

There have also been freezes while web browsing, perhaps unrelated, but
with error messages:
MFC40.DLL (version 4.1.6139)
NETSCAPE.EXE

Some heavy Java pages crash the browser upon opening. Again, perhaps
the browser freezes/crashes are separate from the mail freezes, but the
mail freezes are much more frequent. In an hour of mail reading,
perhaps regularly 1 or 2 freezes.

Netscape Network Preferences for Cache are set at:
Memory: 1024K
Disk Cache: 5000K

I've re-installed Netscape 3 times over the past year but that didn't
solve the problem. I've moved all the Inbox messages to a different
folder, deleted the Inbox and Inbox.snm files to allow Netscape to
create a new Inbox, but that didn't solve the problem.

Several months ago I replaced my power supply because I heard that an
underpowered power supply would cause crashes. That didn't solve the
problem.

At work we also use Netscape 3 and have had similar, not the same,
problems with the Mail app becoming corrupt and requiring the Inbox and
Inbox.snm to be deleted. Although at work it doesn't freeze, but then
at work I'm not performing the same activities reading, deleting, moving
and organizing long mail messages for hours on end.

QUESTION:
Is this freezing problem a known bug with Netscape 3 Mail that other
users also experience?
Besides upgrading Netscape 3, is there a solution?
