Karen,
I haven't seen a dos mp3 player that will play streaming media. There
are, however, several that will play mp3 files provided you have a fast
CPU. My 486DX2/50 isn't enough to use any of them.. dosamp and xtcplay
seem to have the least amount of cpu usage from what I could tell, and I
believe they both support downsampling which might allow them to work on
at least a 486DX/66, albeit with lower sound quality.
I should point out that streaming mp3 uses mpeg compression while
realaudio uses some proprietary compression technology. The quality at
a given bitrate stream is better for streaming mp3 than realaudio
though.
The leader in streaming mp3 has been Nullsoft.. they produce the server
(shoutcast) and the player (winamp). Winamp might be the most popular
player for windows platforms.
For linux I have used mpg123 and xmms (formerly x11amp). I use these on
a P233/MMX so I don't know what their minimum CPU, etc., requirements
are.
Good luck,
Wes
