It sounds as if the Mone/Color detect pin(s) on the VGA card ane not making
good contact.
On a Mono monitor, pin 11 is not connected (ie, it is allowed to float high)
or logic 1, and pin 12 is Grounded, or logic 0.
On a Color monitor, pin 11 is Grounded, and pin 12 allowed to float high.
Check all the pins on the cable end, and the socket on the VGA card.
Also, after booting the computer, at a DOS prompt, type "MODE CO80" and see
if the color returns to text-mode applications - This command overrides the
BIOS' detection of the monitor type.
