I had an old drive on which the drive spindle bearing was failing. I
could hear the drive spin up to speed, and it did so with a loud
whine. It seemed that whenever the drive was hot to the touch it
would spin up immediately, but when it was cold it would take a long
time. Once the drive was up to speed it was OK, but noisy. My
solution was to leave the PC on all the time...
A colleague who acquired the drive after I couldn't stand the noise
any more was frequently seen in his office wearing ear protectors
from the shop floor...
