Your hard disk may have a temperature sensitivity problem.
With age, the actual read/write head armature assembly
travel distances change when cold or hot.  If the condition
is extreme, it may not fully correct, and you just have to
let it warm up.

Usually, however, the condition happens gradually, and can
be corrected by recalibrating the centerline of the drive's
tracks.  Steve Gibson (Gibson Research Corp, www.grc.com)
diagnosed this and solved with with SpinRite years ago.

I can recommend SpinRite highly.  It has salvaged a few
drives for me.  It handles the "head drift" that occurs
with age.  I used SpinRite to fix the drive in my 286
when the cold/hot thing happened to me.
