The error messages were stating that softcon could not process your
message at the present time. Some wise guy decided to launch a syn
flooding attack against all open ports on the server. This tied up the
machine, making it unable to respond to requests of a ligitimate nature.
This even with syn flooding attack prevention code compiled into the
kernel <sigh> That's ok though, we have a meg or so of logs that are on
their way to the provider of the guilty parties, and will follow up very
persistently until something has been done from the other end. The
problem was solved, and we are taking steps to prevent such things in the
future.
