Well, networking is native to Linux. If I collect several gigabytes worth of
files that I might want to use from more than one PC (we're already assuming
there's at least one other "non-Surv" PC out there) then why on earth
duplicate files on each?

Configure one system with a fat hard drive as a server, and access that
resource from the others. Minimal hardware, power consumption and heat on
the remotes, and concentrate disk space on the server.

I think the main point is that Linux is WELL suited to running on minimalist
hardware. I've heard from folks running a 386/33 with 8MB RAM and minimal
hard disk space.

BSD-derivatives are as well, as are many other OSen, no doubt. To say Linux
requires higher end hardware is incorrect.
