Similar thing here in the Los Angeles area. Becoming few and far between.
Up until recently I've always used BBSes as a way to stay informed
whether I have internet access or not.
However, two of my local BBSes (as in just ``up the street'' really)
just went telnet-only which really bummed me out.
Since I didn't have `net access when they did that that pretty much
put an end to my BBS days after all these years (though I might
go back as I miss some of the echos, much friendlier than usenet).
A lack of income keeps me from calling a favorite cross-country board, too.

I happen to have an old issue of the Recycler classifieds here that
has a very large list of BBSes. Today I'm lucky if even one is listed.
Anyway, one of them uses a modest 486 for his board and still uses DOS
I think.
The other has gone Win98 after using OS/2 for ages.

A lot of the old folks (not old as in age) still like to use BBSes
but I bet most current (read Windows) users probably know nothing
about them.
For sysops it just got too expensive. The two I mentioned will keep
chuggin along `cause it's more of a hobby and they don't mind the
lack of users. One sysop told me I was his most active user which tells
me there aren't too many of us left here.
I'd hate to see them disappear completely.
