MSD shows coms 1-3 in default configurations, 4 as non-existant

This one is internal. The whole external modem fracas has been stuck on
the back burner as the problem has been identified as related to
non-functioning serial ports. This is another box and another modem, this
time for a friend who keeps calling "hows it going with that modem?" every day.
