Thanks Randy and boB for setting me straight...I guess I'm back to LaTex
for doing more than HTML lets me do.  It is the very - "It is whatever we
make it and we can change it anytime we want" attitude of MS which makes
things like this so very BAD!

I also picked up on the reality of producing RTF when I started studying
some VERY simple files and discovered that it took a twenty line preamble
to produce 5 lines of text. Wrong!

I think boB's comment about not sending him RTF (or PDF) is one that
should be SOP.  I use RTF primarily to get around the internal
incompatabilities of successive versions of Word in sending docs to people
I work with - when I KNOW that they can accept the format.  But the
results still aren't what I expect much of the time.  In general, I
consider it unwise to assume that someone is able to read anything but
straight ascii text, which remains the one format we all can live with.

So a hearty "Here! Here!" to saying "No!" to RTF.  And not to worry about
stepping on these toes - I always read with one hand on the "D" key.
