Apologies if this has already been suggested, but I've been lurking on this
thread thinking I didn't have much to add. However, your friend's comments
did strike a chord. Are you certain that the drive information recorded in
BIOS has not changed? A change in geometry could result in many "bad"
sectors being detected. Hopefully, your friend recorded the "correct"
information somewhere -- I finally got in the habit of either putting it on
the drive itself in semi-permanent fashion, or maintaining a system
confirguration sheet.
Again, I've not kept the older messages, but do I understand that this is an
IDE drive? IDE certainly makes setup much easier, but if the BIOS
information is way off, it could certainly cause grief. If nothing else
seems to help and you're about to give up once and for all, it might be
worth resetting the BIOS settings, fdisking and reformatting the drive. This
is a measure of last resort (no recovery of data on the drive) but if this
was the problem, it should all start to feel much better and not cause
further problems. And this time, you'll have all the info recorded!
Good luck!
