It got its name from the Monty Python sketch. If you haven't seen it, some
guy walks into a cafe and asks what's on the menu. Nearly everything is
spam-based, and it finishes off with the Spam Song. I believe that was on
Simtel in the multimedia/sounds directory.
Anyway, the point is, there was an excessive amount of Spam in the sketch,
so the huge amounts of unsolicited c{ommercial,rap} e-mail we get became
known as spam.
