Hi Folks,
I have to advise that SPAM pre-dates Monty Python. It even
predates me, just, by a year or two.
During the second world war, in England, food was "on ration"
because of the sea blockade by Germany. All, repeat ALL, available
edible material was pressed into service for food production, including
(so my father told me) sugar-beet pulp + artificial strawberry flavouring
+ sawdust (to simulate strawberry pips) was made into "strawberry jam".
Also, from all the bits of slaughtered pigs that couldn't be
offered as regular meat ('cos nobody would eat it), was made a finely
ground composite containing some artificial flavouring to disguise any
"off" odours called SPAM. Yes, = Spiced Pork and Ham. This was cooked
and sealed in tins. Spam was not on ration.
To my horror, and I can remember eating spam as a small child,
in England, just after the war when rationing was still on, I have seen
tins of SPAM offered on the same supermarket shelves as tinned ham and
tinned corned beef (which has a similar history) here in Australia, as if
it is something to enjoy.
You need to know these things to really appreciate the total
unbelievability of someone having a passion for spam in the Monty python
sketch. This is a VERY British joke.
A message for any spam eaters out there - YYUUUUCCCHHHHH !!!!!
Regards,
Ron Clarke
