Most likely.  :(

If it's not related to OS then it can only be either 1) something
the controller hardware is doing on its own, or 2) mechanical
vibration, caused by worn bearings/bushes. If this becomes bad
enough it can cause read/write errors and eventually a head-crash.

Since you would be used to 1) since you've had the disk it's obviously
not that... therefore... start doing backups and saving for a new one!
