Possibly. Before panic sets in, try grabbing some of the auto idle
utils from simtel/msdos/diskutil (diskutl?). Run one, setting auto
idle to off. Something you fed your machine may have written to
the auto-idle register behind your back. It's becoming
increasingly common.
