Usually Rom's are pretty reliable, but yes, they can be damaged...

Here's how to backup the memory range F000:0000 to F000:FFFF to a file -
enter these 3 lines into a Dos box; Expect nothing to show while you're
typing the 2nd and 3rd lines, and the 2nd line will take a while to
run!;

Debug > ROM_Bkup.EPR <cr>
D F000:0 L FFFF <cr>
Q <cr>

I'll make a tool to turn that into a valid backup ROM image if I cannot
figure out a better way (harass me off-list <G>) Should write a quick
application that writes a good image, I guess, that'd take a whole half
hour for any good programmer.

I have EPRom burners "out the Wazoo" here, (3 off the top of my head -
it's late <G>) - if you send me an EPRom (windowed or OTP, One Time
Programmable) with an SASE, and a file to burn, I'll burn it (erasing it
first if needed) and mail it back to you, for free. (Also have all
kinds of other device programmers as well.)  Or I can buy the EPRom;
You could even pull the EPRom off your motherboard and send it with a
blank part, but that's more of a pain than most people want.

To roll your own, here are a reader and a couple writers:
http://www.zws.com/products/epromr1/index.html Dos/Win (Non NT) Reader;
http://www.zws.com/products/epromr2/index.html Dos/Win Writer;
http://www.willem.org/nprome.htm Windows Writer;

Also Needham's PB-10's are about $120 or so - Decent tool, and do most
EPRoms.
