Hear, Hear!
I am astonished. I am watching a dozen of the people
I admire most indulge in emotionally enturbulating
intercourse rather than enlightening discussion.
I can't address you all individually and remain
coherent, but as a group I must say it seems several
of you have become infected with a virulent strain
of the "I'm right, you're wrong; I can bring more
facts to bear than you can; my opinions are better
founded than yours" virus.
I don't think anything would be served by reciting
all the titles of the technical books from my shelves,
but I'm sure I could use the fact that I have them
to justify saying something that would offend 4 or 5
of you. And then someone could point out just how
childish that gesture was. And someone else could
agree with me. Someone else could produce a detailed
analysis of my message, refuting each claim in turn.
Shall we try that?
If you were all in the same room, I would believe
that someone had tampered with the water.
Who among you gives a damn how much I know? It is
my hope that I can contribute value to the group,
and that "how much I know" doesn't count for as
much as my willingness to share it with you. Any
knowledge I have is of little use if I don't share
it or, worse yet, all I do with it is establish
and defend a position.
I'll shut up now.
