Have you tried Riven and Myst? I don't know if they'll run on a DOS
platform but they do not multitask on your machine when running so there is
a good possibility that they will. These are on CDs can only be run from
cd. Produced by Broderbund they have fantastic image resolution, nothing
hunts you or vice versa, and while exploring the mysterious worlds you have
a grand mystery to solve with clues left lying about and many curious
secret switches to fiddle with. They'll run on an older x86 machine,
though I don't know how far back or how little ram, I've not got the specs
here.

Inertia. It's not just an object at rest tends to stay at rest; it's
also an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
