Never mind, dear readers about my problem with interactive prompts and passwords with CUTCP telnet and ftp. I solved the problem, apparently in a dream and thought up a song to boot! The ``mode'' CUTCP ftp was complaining about was not an ftp mode, which does (do) exist. It was the permissions for the file .netrc. It wanted to see .netrc set with read permissions for the file's owner and no read/write/execute permissions for all others. I had it set for read and write permissions for me (the owner). When I changed that, it accepted the password in .netrc. Tower of babel problem again -- error messages are notorious for ``lucidity''.
