Guess this would meant for local/short range private network
that not connected to the internet in any way? Could you be
more specific? What are the data sources? Should the
processing real time or not?

The possibilities are ranging from Netware to Linux box, NOS
included. Perhaps what you want is a seamless TCP/IP LAN
over SLIP (serial line) and/or IPX (ethernet)?
