Thanks John,

Very helpful. There is a lot of talk trying to convince people to move to
ethernet within the workplace - but my guess is that here in the Southern
Philippines, what I will run into more often than not is just what you
described. Thanks for helping me cut through the jumble - fieldbus,
modbus, devicenet, X10....RS-422 (RS-485?) then it is for any settings
where you want multiple devices on the line.

Here is where I see the ethernet coming in. The controlling computer -
eventually some single board machine - but for learning at first a
Survivor PC - communicates OUT either via ethernet TCP/IP or using another
computer as a gateway to handle that aspect. For some of the things I'm
thinking of I don't need things to be deterministic - an varying second or
two delay (sometimes longer) can be acceptable. The nice thing about
using TCP/IP in this way is that it gives a great deal of flexibility in
where the data goes and how you display it. You get all the obvious
benefits (and risks) of distributed processing.

Your point about skill level is well taken. It's been a long time since
I've written any C or Fortran code and I wasn't that good back then. But I
wouldn't have started on this track if I wasn't willing to put the effort
in to getting the skills I need. I'm also pretty conversant with the
electronics aspects.

So thanks! I'd still love to see some simple examples even not using the
industrial standards - even just simple parallel or serial port stuff - on
the web.
