Have you looked for a LUG in your area? They are
usually very happy to help newbies. You might also
want to try the newbie mailing list:

There are some Linux gurus on the list, who are very
helpful if you give them full details of your problem.
Even if you don't have a specific problem, you can
learn a lot by lurking.
