Hi all,
I was just wondering, what's the usual fate of SurvPCs in
your countries?
Here in Indonesia, even 486s and fast 386s still utilized
and sellable. There's still a quite large market sector
for SurvPCs, range from single-person-run informal home
businesses wich buying and selling locally; to large scale
companies which importing "obsolete" PCs in bulk, sorting,
testing, and refurnish them with new casings, keyboard,
mouse, etc., and then mass resell them as "Your el cheapo
exclusive home PC". Altough I also know at least one big
factory nearby which importing SurvPCs (also in bulk) just
to annihilate them into pieces. This is of course part of
a multinational recycling conspir... er... company <g>
Backtracking our list's archives, reveals quite interesting
stories on this topic:
Mostly in the US and West-Europe countries, SurvPCs are:
* Became time capsules, hermits, etc. -- byte dust to be
forgotten somewhere in our attics, cellars, garages, or
(some company's) secret warehouses (to avoid taxes).
* Re-used as fancy paperweights, door stops, and boat
anchors.
* Tossed into trashcans and dumpsters, altough some of us
enjoying a large private collections of SurvPCs for free
by doing a series of magickal ceremonies commonly known
as "dumpster diving".
* Ended up in thrift stores, pawn stores, or traded among
hobbyists in flea markets, auctions, and garage sales.
* Given to charity organizations, or self-revived by a few
angel-hearted individuals and donated to the poor.
* Surrendered to recycling companies to be killed, maimed,
and annihilated (yawn).
* Revived and re-commercialized, at least one US-based
company currently trying this: http://globalpc.com/
Perhaps there's even more unreported sightings out there? ;-)
