Well, Bas, I would suggest you try booting those machines without the
network and identify for certain that it is a network issue, although it
sure looks like it.  The other fellow's suggestion of terminators of the
appropriate resistance is your best bet then.  It's not the distance, I
don't think, although as an experiment you can put them close together with
a short cable.  Could also be something simply wrong with the cable, broken
wires inside intact insulation from sharp bending or pinching could do it.
