Are you using terminators on T connectors at each end of the cable? 5m is
certainly within spec (185m is the max without a repeater). On longer runs,
ONE end should be terminated, but for a setup in a single room, that's
probably not the problem. A quick and dirty test would be to try another
cable and/or terminators. Coax is unforgiving if the cable is damaged, and a
good twist can ruin one. Of course, leaving a terminator off can stop you
too!

Well, I had a couple of discussions on this list regarding my old Commodore
PET 2000, so I suppose something as modern as a C16 should be OK!
