No, not all pcmcia modems need windows. Yes, a pcmcia modem may work like
a regular modem, if your system has pcmcia access outside of windows, like
int he bios
it should act like an internal plug and play modem on a regular machine,
take itself a comport and go from there. I would say try running
hyperterminal and see if you can connect with it.
it may be installed already.
