For now Windows 9x/NT and Mac only... But it really free for
either PC to Phone (US destinations) or PC to PC (worldwide):

  http://messenger.msn.com/ (yes, Micro$oft ;-)
  http://www.dialpad.com/
  http://www.phonefree.com/

I wonder if any open-source clone already available yet. Probably
could even be ported to DOS? ;-)

BTW, anyone have experience on peer to peer (direct IP) chat
programs? If we use low-enough quality U-Law-compressed sound
stream (built-in codec on SB Pro and up, IIRC), probably it would
be possible to write a simplified voice over IP program for DOS
that works like a handy talky? Since compression/decomp already
handled by the sound card's hardware, there's no need for CPU-hog
software compressor/decompressor anymore: Should be suitable even
for "true" SurvPCs...

   "Hello there sweety, over." bleep

"Heard ya loud and clear, over." bleep

   (and so on...)

Naw, I should be daydreaming! ;-)
