I can easily imagine a very good reason why a website offering pdfs for
downloads would require that they be readable from only one machine.  What
if the pdfs consist of copyright material and the authors want a royalty
and the person performing the download has to pay for the pdfs?  By
having the pdfs readable from only one machine the website accomplishes
copyright protection.  If Napster were to adopt a similar scheme, and the
persons downloading the MP3 files were paying patrons, then the recording
artists would not be robbed of their well-deserved royalties.  This kind
of arrangement with the artists would most probably be considered legal.
Everbody would be happy except for those who feel that they have a right
to receive the product of some starving artist's difficult study and hard
work for free.
