I do not think we should be asking Eko to provide an English translation
for us. I believe we should trust that Eko would know to have given us a
bilingual edition of his post if it were appropriate for him to do so.
As this list has an international membership, all list members should feel
free to post in whatever language they prefer. No one should be prevailed
upon to provide a bilingual version of any message. There may be many
members whose knowledge of English might not be sufficient so as to feel
comfortable about sending a message to hundreds of readers in English.
There are others who for other reasons might not want to send a message
in English to the list. Suppose for example you wanted to post a pun
in Spanish? How could it be funny if you translated it? Suppose you
wanted to post some lines of poetry or a wise saying? The meaning and
beauty of it could be totally lost in translation. Suppose that our
proper understanding of a message requires a knowledge of the history,
culture, and religion of the person sending the message. A mere
translation would be meaningless to most people who understand no language
other than English.
All the best,
Sam Heywood
