Hello Tom:
I am certain that a 486 will support a 33.6 modem. I use a 33.6 modem in
my 386sx. A 486 might even support a 56k. Don't know. Never tried it.
Of course if you are going to be using DOS internet apps, then you will
want to make sure that you install a real modem instead of just a
Win-Modem, otherwise you will need Windows to support your modem.
If all you want to do is e-mail, then you would probably find even an old
2400 modem satisfactory. A 2400 works OK for me when all I'm dealing with
is just e-mail. I can even use it for browsing with a text browser such as
Net-Tamer or Bobcat, although it is mighty slow when being used for this
purpose.
If you want to use your modem mainly for e-mail and only occasional
browsing, then a 14.4 modem might suit your needs just fine.
All the best,
Sam Heywood
