Hello, everyone --

You may recall how I struggled to understand and correct the
locking up of my XT, likely due to a bad timer chip, which I
recently replaced. Well, although I still got the report of
the "102" error (supposedly a flawed timer chip message) from
the old IBM diagnostic program, I noticed the system worked
a little smoother. But it continued to show further signs
of instability and occasionally locked up again after further
testing -- especially while using my Net-Tamer Internet
program.

Then, after combing my autoexec.bat and config.sys statements
over for the umpteenth, I discovered that one PC DOS 3.3
TSR program might be causing me a problem: FASTOPEN.EXE.
This program is supposed to speed up your directory access,
which it did, but I learned that it's not good to use it
with the SUBST command (which I need with my old WordStar 3.3
wordprocessor), nor should it be used with a network (would
this include online Internet activity?).

Anyway, lo and behold, I've not experienced any lock ups with
the XT after removing it. For speed enhancements, I have tried
a few other little programs and tricks with settings and what
have you to achieve my desired performance.

I'll share with you some of my autoexec.bat and config.sys
settings to let you see some of what has worked for me...

------[autoexec.bat]-----------

@ECHO OFF

DATE
TIME
ECHO.

PATH C:\;C:\DOS;C:\BATCH;C:\UTIL;C:\WS33
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP

ZENO [A program that enhances screen display, etc..]
ECHO.

C:\UTIL\RECALL.COM -I [A program like the later DOSKEY]
ECHO.

TIMEPARK 3 [A program that parks hdd heads when idle]

PAUSE

PROMPT=$P$G

--------[config.sys]----------

STACKS=12,128
BUFFERS=16
FILES=30
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS

-------------------------------

So there you have it: a stable system at last! It's been a
lot of work figuring out, but it's been worth it. I can now
consider this PC/XT to be fully restored, finely tuned and
capable of honorable use and service well into the 21st century!

Thank you all, again, for your help.
