Perhaps the program worked fine with very simple, non-networked
systems. Unfortunately, as systems and programs became more
complicated, older programs like FASTOPEN became less and less
compatible with what was going on.
I didn't suspect a software problem, since I still would get
lockups even when I'd try operating with a barebones hardware
and software system. I'm convinced that it was appropriate for
me to change the timer chip; otherwise, I would never have been
able to isolate some of the other software instabilities. Aside
from FASTOPEN, another program I've just about given up on is a
small editor called simply "edit.exe" that I used with Net-Tamer
(since it had WordStar-like editing), instead of its native
"red.com" editor (not that good, either). It, too, just caused
a lockup while I was writing this message to you (I had to walk
away for several minutes and came back to a locked screen). This
same program was also causing errors with Net-Tamer on my AT,
so out it goes!

I *think* I got it (along with PARKIT) at Simtel/MS-DOS. You should
be able to search for those two names and find it there. They're
freeware. Since the XT doesn't park its hard drive heads after
powering down, I use PARKIT before doing so. The TIMEPARK program
protects the hard drive heads during idle time with a timer
(up to 9 minutes); you'll hardly notice when it starts and stops as
you're working (all I've noticed is a very faint squeak when it
goes off and on).
If you can't locate it, I'll send it to you.
>> PAUSE
>What is the pause for, in the autoexec.bat?
Those three programs (ZENO, RECALL and TIMEPARK) have messages
indicating that they've been loaded, and I like to see them
(hence the PAUSE command) before continuing to the DOS prompt
during bootup. They remind me of what I've got loaded in addition
to my normal DOS configuration.
