I see Alessio Palma has responded to your inquery. My PC/XT most
likely has had a hardware problem, part of which involved the
timer chip; I replaced that, and the problem diminished greatly.
After more use, however, I've noticed that as long as I use the XT
continually throughout the day, it seldom locks up. (There were
also some configuration adjustments and problem programs removed
that helped a lot.) But if I let the machine run *idle*, it will
lock up (yes, still!) after two or four hours -- sooner, if I have
the printer and/or modem connected *and* activated for use. As
long as I keep those quirks in mind, though, it's fairly safe for
light use. I rarely need to run it more than a few hours at a time
anyway. I'm just grateful to have got it working reasonably well
for my purposes.
I'm almost certain your problem is software related, since you said
it works fine under Linux. Perhaps Alessio or someone else more
knowledgeable will be able to pinpoint your particular problem...
