It's possible the UPS delivered the last few gasps of juice in lowered
strength and taxed the power supply.  Try changing the PS with a known good one
better still, swap out the hard drive into a good machine, try loading and
running it in there, if the install and all work fine, you know it's not
software but hardware related and can start troubleshooting that.
Another suggested a wearing-thin battery, that could be, but i'd look first
to the PS because of the "brownout" possibility.
A good UPS really oughtta include feedback circuitry and software so that
it shuts down the system itself and then switches off the power, rather
than just running down on you.
