To which Yolanda responds:
no, actually, in his case uninstalling the family tree software that caused
the problem is step one, and re-running windows installation OVER TOP of
the existing install is step two.
One can also go patiently through the registry using the find command to
find instances of the uninstalled program's name or main exe name (like if
it was famtree.exe you'd search famtree) and so forth to make sure all
traces are gone. (delete all keys with that name) If you wish you can make
a backup of the registry first. Either do this through scanreg (reboot
into msdos to do this) or by making copies of user.dat and system.dat found
in c:\windows.|
also making sure you've deleted any files similarily tagged that have been
deposited elsewhere like c:\, c:\windows\ and c:\windows\system\
depending on how much you've customized your system, it might take less
time to ferret out all traces of the offending program than to reinstall
your system. I've successfully done this in the past, although I cannot
guarantee that it will always work.
Then, if one cannot find any other software application to replace the
offending one which immediately precedes the trouble, one attempts to open
a dialog with the vendor/developer/programmer to address the issue, sending
any documentation one may have. If there is a newer version, patch or
upgrade for the software one might wish to try installing it again, but
would be advised to make as comprehensive a backup as possible just in case.
Far too often reformat + reinstall is prescribed when patient detective
work would in the end take less time and grief.
I have found that getting all my icons, shortcuts, colors and sounds,
applications and settings, start menu and file system just the way I like
it, drivers and so forth, takes 3-5 days of dedicated work, that's using
comprehensive zipped backups too.
Combing through the files, msconfig (start-->run-->msconfig) and registry
takes only a few hours. (hey Sam, am i a wizard? heheheh)
