As many with me I don't understand the question. Why does some programs
that output sound require a soundcard?
I'm assuming you mean this as reuirements for a DOS prog:

XT, 512K RAM, fits on a 160K floppy (or is there some smaller ammount?)

However xpdf (where pdftotex(t).exe is one of the programs) require a 386
with a co-pro or a co-pro emulator. It's still a DOS program since it runs
under DOS.
