Yes on all counts. The Linux Router Project others have been embedded quite
successfully, as have other OSen. In many cases, the device behaves, for all
intents and purposes, just like a small (by modern standards) hard drive.

M-Systems (http://www.m-sys.com/index.asp) also has a drop-in flash
replacement for IDE drives.

My knowledge of all this comes from having researched just that idea for
producing an inexpensive and reliable firewall/router combo. Alas, never
completed. There may be others on the list who have one working.
