I just moved up from a 386sx to a 486dx last fall. I'm using DOS 6.22, no
Windows. I have a connection via bbs-style terminal emulation programme to
an ISP that gives me a shell account and access to LYNX, PINE, PICO and
TIN. As this is a text-only connection, it is 1/3 the price of the
graphics accounts. My 14.4 external modem is too slow for graphics. I'm
using BananaCom to dial in. Previously, I used Telix and QuickLinks; but,
they are ASCII only and so couldn't read half the pages that are up these
days. BananaCom can read most of this; and what it can't, I download and
view through a file viewer called VIEWER. This will all work in 1 mg RAM
and very tiny disk space. I ignore all those messages that say, "This site
uses frames. Please update your browser." When I run into a site that
offers an alternate text-only version, I always send the webmaster a
thank-you note and advise them of the "any browser" campaign.
Recently, I tried out a demo disk of QNX, a stand-alone graphics browser
that runs off a 1.44 floppy. It unpacks into 8 mg RAM. You can find it at
www.qnx.com. I'm not a developer, so I don't understand most of what is on
this site; but I do like the demo. This browser can handle forms that my
reular setup can't.
I have been trying to find out more about IBM's tiny DOS browser called
WebBoy; but, most of the documentation is in Japanese or Korean. There is
a very rough translation at
www.apj.co.uk/webboy/ibm_webboy_home_translation.htm.
The old pre-windows GUI called GEM is still alive and kicking; and I hear
they are developing some kind of browser.
There is also Nettamer, which doesn't seem to be getting developed any
more. It doesn't handle forms or JAVA.
Does anyone know anything about a programme called "CELLO"? This was Win.
3.1 freeware browser; but, I can't find it.
