Hello to everyone, I'm new to the list and have been lurking for awhile to
see what's what. Just a brief little statement about me and how I got
started into this thing. Began working with computers about 22 years ago,
built a little 1K Sinclair ZX-81 and taught myself BASIC on it. I've
progressed a bit from there, going what seems the normal route, TI-99/4A,
Tandy CoCo, Commodore 128 and then onto PC's. Throw in a Mac or two along
the way and you pretty much have it all. A friend here in town suggested
this list and I must say it's been interesting so far. I must admit that
it (older PC's) is a hobby with me as I have several more powerful systems
up and running. Part of my hobby deals with networking and I'm presently
trying to set up a file server to run on my LAN, a 486DX4-100 with 16 Mb of
RAM, which will run some flavor of Linux. This system is mounted in a
server case with plenty of room for HD's. I plan to fill this space with 4
Seagate Elite 9 Gb SCSI drives as soon as they arrive. I purchased these
drives as NOS and they are full-height 5.25" models. I don't have a lot of
experience with Linux, other than setting up several flavors on a multi-OS
machine I have. I want to set up this machine to run Samba so that it can
be used on my WIndows network as the file server. The closest I've come to
getting this done while experimenting was while I was running the 2nd
edition of Corel Linux. Using that OS running Samba, I was actually able
to see the other machines on my network and they could see the Linux system
in Network Neighborhood. I never could get any files to transfer or even
to view the files on the other systems as I ran into a password block each
time. I think it had something to do with using the shares level security
instead of the user level, but I didn't know how to set up the browse list
to use for this security level. I am presently doing some work with a
system running RedHat 7.1 on the LAN and cannot even see the other machines
or it see them. Doing some stuff with ping and some other diag software, I
think my present problem has something to do with the IP addressing on the
Linux machine. Even though I told it to setup as 169.254.11.1, the only
way I could see any results was to ping 127.0.0.1 from any of my WIndows
systems. So my question is, what is the best/easiest way to accomplish
this feat. I care nothing about running any kind of software on the Linux
system and it doesn't even need to run X-Windows unless that is necessary
to accomplish this goal. From what I've read it is not really needed. I
just want to use the Linux system to store and retrieve my many PC
files. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anyone who has
messed with Linux much would have to agree that this is one of the worst
documented OS's out there! But it seems to be very stable and would be
perfect for what I need. Thanks...
P.S. My vote for best DOS based word processor is for Textra v6.0. Beat
the big boys hands down. Too bad no one knew about it...
