X is unnecessary. A 486 with 16meg RAM can't
afford to waste resources on unnecessary processes.

If I were you, I would get the network running
using Linux on all machines (all you need on
the "client" machines in a mini-Linux). Once
the network is working 100%, introduce Samba.

I disagree. There is a plethora of documentation
available. HOWTOs, man pages, info, source code,
books, magazines, numerous online articles, etc.
Linux is the fourth OS I have taken up and, without
a doubt, it provides the most documentation.
It is true that much of Linux documentation is
difficult for newbies to understand, but that's
the way it goes. Your ZX-81 had a learning curve
and I'm sure you spent many months coming to
grips with it. Ditto Linux.
