Bernie - what _is_ the solution found on the Arachne list ?

There may indeed be some copyright issue involved in simply putting a
*present* "distribution" of "Simtel.net" on a public www site.(*)

But maybe there's a way around:

Earlier conventions (!note: the present contracts are different, and the
present firm which claims the "Simtel" makr is in no way identical with
the former such, nor has it inherited and any legal title of that
earlier "SimTel.Net"!) with mirror sites were pretty simple an not
constraining. The mirror site holder offered storage place and access
for free, while SimTel pledged to "maintain" (and update) the content.
There was no obligation for the mirror site to follow or implement any
of the maintenance updated.

All this seems to have changed with the new arrangement, and mirror
site have fallen for a quiet holdup by the new "simtel.net" owners to
privatise the formerly public content.

But nothing constrains them to not mantain an *earlier* state of
affairs, i.e. any installation they had *before* the new regime set in.

So it's to find sites willing to do so.
(I see the one or other potential candidate among some servers I used to
used; typically, univ places too.)

!!! BTW: DON'T MENTION ANY SERVER NAMES CARRYING THE EARLIER SIMTEL
VERSIONS OPENLY IN THIS DISCUSSION, ON THIS LIST OR ELSWHERE --
THEY ARE LISTENING IN (OR AT LEAST CAN SCAN THE LIST ARCHIVES)
FOR CHASING AND UPROOTING THOSE SERVERS THAT ESCAPED THEM !!!

There might be a copyright issue involved with the very naming of
"simtel.net" in any URL. But as all those univ servers have their own
names, and any file archive there is just some directory(-tree) there,
this shouldn't be a problem.
To avoid confusion, and to enhance the unique ressource, some tree
(re-)naming to, say, "dos-legacy" would even be appropriate (as well
as getting rid of that misleading "ms").

(*) Cf. a separate post to the LifeRaft list; the M$ copyright warfare
is very relevant for that whole names business (sic), as through the
WIPO (world intellectual property rights org) aggreement, firms got a
strong hand to seize anything anywhere which even by far could allude
to, or might give reason for confusion with, "brand names". And this
"new simtel" junta seems quit set to go to some length with stealing the
work of others, by monopolising acces to it.

Remember that not one byte in these archives belongs to (new) simtel.
They only have the "brand name" to present them.
