My first printer was a 9 pin Star with no lowercase descenders. I remember
it fondly (sometimes).

After having once disassembled a 24 pin unit, I would suggest AVOIDING the
problem if at all possible. If the pins are merely hitting sporadically
(rather than missing), I seem to recall a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol
could help. I believe they're meant to lubricate from the ribbon, but
perhaps some lubrication is called for. If you can open the unit partially
without having everything fall out, a blast with an air cannister might
help.
Also, make sure that the gap between head and paper isn't too small to
accomodate the ribbon appropriately. Older ribbons can be re-inked, but they
do fray which may speed buildup of lint.

In my case, they always retracted completely flush with the head.
Good luck!
