Dear karen,
You certainly should be able to remove Windows from that system, and
install DOS. Judging from the hardware list you've provided above,
you should be able to get the system up and running with a minimum of
trouble. DOS version 6 or better should work just fine. You may have
some trouble with the modem, though, if it is one of the "WinModem"
types. Some IBM PC-compatible modems have some of their functions
performed in software, instead of in hardware. These modems are called
"WinModems" and usually only function properly in Windows. In my
experience, it's rare that 28.8 modems are WinModems, but there were a
few. Most WinModems are 33.6 or 56K types. If that's the case,
you'll only need to replace the modem.
Once you receive your new text reader software, it should be possible
to install Windows 98 on the same system, without any problems. Well,
without any problems other than the usual Windows installation problems
- getting the right drivers, etc. <grin>
Plenty of computers are around that have had older OSes installed on
them, so that special use applications can still be used. Even the
latest Pentium 4 can still run DOS, fortunately. We've got several
newer computers here on campus that run DOS or OS/2, for use with
applications for which no Windows equivalents exist.
Hope this helps,
