I'm not a big fan of Windows - but I would suggest you leave things as
they are - at least while you check out everything thoroughly. Give it a
good "test drive".

Is your modem a "Winmodem", or a true hardware modem? Could you reinstall
Windows 95 and any proprietary setup - as well as restoring a backup of
the system and any of the software on the system that you also "inherited"
legitimately? (I.e. it's freeware; shareware you have yet to try out,
still in its trial period, or you bought it; or you inherited the
software licence/installation disk.)

You wouldn't want to blow away everything only to find out that you need
to buy special drivers for the motherboard, on-board soundcard, and that
you need Windows for the modem to work - and then find out it will take $$
to make things work.

I gather you are thinking of upgrading to Windows 98.
