Maybe the BIOS is not set to see it? Chronic with old mthbds is a dead or bad battery. does it have the right time and date? Is the ide is recognized by the BIOS?
I dunno how many ide/fd controllers I seen which run the ide just fine, but wont do a floppy. does the fd light come on? does it go off? I've seen fd which work one day, then dont the next.
