Garry - this is on of the problems:

- there is no such; to have a (nearly) eqivalent setting as a
line printer in either HP ("PCL level 3") or IBM ("Proprinter")
mode, 6 out of 16 DIP switches have to be changed (and these are
not extremely comfortable to accesse).
Mostly, the beast is used for printing linewise (through an X switch
from a DOS machine or an open line to plug-in one of two Linux boxes).
The HP-specific mode however, lacks one printer command which the
"Proprinter" mode does have, and which is rather decisive for a
formatted line-printing output, namely a single, defineable vertical
transport - say, 18 / 216 (inch) - as empty space between paragraphs,
for instance.
So it's set for normal use to the "Proprinter" DIPs settings.
Then, none of the fax-viewer prog.s I can use on the DOS machine
likes either one of the two modes (I use BGFAX, which has a print-out
function; but preferred to view, and perhaps print, with the ZyXel
"zfax"; both worked fine on different other machines, including an
- dang, expensive, always drying-up - Epson Stylus bubbledang which I
have thrown out, finally.) The BGFAX viewer never worked with the Herc
screens - but did print though, mysteriously. So that's why I used
zfax rather.
There's a cumbersome work-around which does it with the HP DJ510:
converting the fax page to a .PCX image, and using any one of three
different pixel utils to print - those seem not to have any hickup.
But the procedure is quite nagging.
