I'm not "anti-Windows". I am, however, very "pro-OpenSource"software. I agree that there's far too much blatant Windows-bashing on this list, and have become involved in more than one flame-fest over it (just see the archives. :) I do get a tad irritable when someone starts with "Linux is too hard because", or "Linux can't" (see aforementioned flames) but there is some validity to what you say. OpenSource in general and Linux in particular aren't quite there yet for the average user. However, I do STRONGLY feel it's getting close, and I hope people at least give it a fair look. I've mentioned before, Linux runs the servers in my little world. The desktops are still Windows, mostly because of the dependency of newer game titles. This is changing too, but only slowly. 2. I don't see choice of operating system as a political or moral issue. Ever since I bought my (then) new Apple II and encountered a bunch of TRS-80 users a a user meet, I've realized that there are relative strengths and weaknesses to each, and personal satisfaction is what counts. I have no trouble hoisting a few beers with Mac users and Windows users, even at the same table. 3. I think people that lump others into categories based on choice of OS are idiots. See the aforementioned flames in the archives. If a posting starts out with "Windoze users deserve viruses", "Anyone using Microsoft deserves" or anything similar, I usually get annoyed. There are charities, cancer researchers and other folks doing good work with those tools. I may not love the tools, but I respect the good works being done with them. If someone feeds the poor using a microwave oven, that's great, even if it isn't my idea of fine cooking. 4. Anytime is a good time for humor. The list is about "Surv"-class hardware, and I think Linux is GREAT on such a platform, though not necessarily trivial. I'm happy to try to help anyone that starts with "How do I make Linux do ...", but I'll probably get cranky when they start with "Linux sucks because I can't do ...". And I'm afraid I do get verbose when certain folks start blowing smoke. :) Don't get too discouraged about the list. Things normally run in cycles, and we do tend to come together when someone has a problem. You may catch some flack about XP, but just listen for those looking for help and contribute where you can! - Bob To unsubscribe from SURVPC send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe SURVPC in the body of the message.
