Hello everybody,

For some time I've been improving a 286 clone I was given. It has a 20 Mhz
CPU. I installed the 16 Mb of RAM a 286 can manage. The IDE drive was
replaced by a very fast 2 Gb SCSI HDD and a 4x SCSI CDROM drive. It also has
a fast, 1 Mb VGA video card. Finally I added a 56k, V.90 modem with a baud
rate of 230,400 bps. I connect to my ISP -which has proxy servers- generally
at 44,000 bps.

Thanks to my friend David Rust -who's also in this list - I could get DR-DOS
7.03 and create UMBs on the 286. So, I'm having a conventional memory well
over 600 Kb loading high everything I could.

Then, I loaded W3.1 and several W3.1 programs. The PC runs more than
reasonably fast under W3.1. Certainly, in standard mode.

Thanks to Alejandro Lieber -also in this list- who sent me a DOS Telnet
program,
I was able to browse the Web in text mode at an extremely fast speed by
connecting my PC as an ANSI VT-100 terminal to a server in USA. That server
lets you browse the Web with a version of Lynx they supply. It also lets you
download files using Kermit, but at a very slow speed.
I also tried Lynx for DOS version 0.16a -the last one made for XTs and 286s-
but found it slow as an FTP client even loading it into a RAM disk. Arachne
is too slow handling graphics in my 286.
As for email, I tried a lot of programs including Nettamer, SLIPpper, etc,
etc. I guess I tried them all. The main problems arise with MIME,
attachments, digests, etc.

I need a web browser working in graphic mode for I need to see some
pictures. But I found that most of Web browsers developed for W3.1 work only
on 386+. I tried Opera, UdiWWW, Mosaic, Cello, Oracle Power Browser, etc. to
no avail. All of them seem to have been developed for 386+.

But I could find a very good email client - better in many respects than
Outlook Express- that works comfortably under W3.1.

Another problem I have in W3.1 is that also winsock 1.1 compliant programs
seem to work only in 386+. I tried Trumpet winsock version 3.0 to no avail.
It wouldn't even install on my 286 PC.

So, I'm opened to any suggestions, ideas, comments you could make to have
web browser+FTP+email clients to work on my 286 whether it be under DOS or
W3.1.

TIA,

Jorge Rieznik.
